Osborne p 324 gives a copy dated 1862. The author and the artist, who are not named in the book, are respectively R M Ballantyne and (probably) Harrison Weir. Some of the cats are partly clothed and have human characteristics.

Base’s illustrations are vibrant and bold, set within patterned borders. They tell the story of Horace the Elephant and his eleventh birthday party with the animal guests. I have never seen any of Base’s work before. It is exciting and amusing.

This is the first book illustrated by Beaton who was 24 at the time that the book was published. The elegant style off the illustrations are a foretaste of the fashion designs that he was to produce later on in his life.
